Rope Access User Course
BS 7985 / ISO is ideal for companies who do not presently undertake rope access and wish to develop an in-house capability in specific, lower risk, environments. It allows a more detailed coverage of training skills in environments similar to the intended work environment.

The course is not intended for persons who will be working in varied work locations or who will be required to carry out a range of work tasks. Candidates wishing to work as general rope access subcontractors should consider the IRATA Level 1 course.

NOTE: This course is at User level - employers must ensure adequate supervision is provided for candidates following this course

This entry level course is designed for those who have specific trade skills but wish to use rope access as a method of gaining access to their worksite.

The course is not intended for persons who will be working in varied work locations or who will be required to carry out a range of work tasks. Candidates wishing to work as general rope access sub-contractors should consider the IRATA Level 1 course.

Theoretical content includes requirements of BS 7985 and draft ISO/DIS 22846-2.

Covers the characteristics of a safe system of work, including equipment, legal requirements, objective hazards, risk assessment and method statements, conformity and certification, inspection, emergency considerations and rescue procedures.

The practical content includes the requirements of ISO/DIS 22846-2; the basic principles of movement on ropes - ascent, descent, changing from ascent to descent, changing from rope to rope, passing a deviation, use of a back-up system - elementary rigging and rope management, elementary rescue.

NOTE: This course is at User level - Employers must ensure that adequate supervision is provided for candidates following this course. Supervisors should be competent in all rope access techniques appropriate to the workplace and the level of supervision should be appropriate to the work situation and the number and skills of the operatives in the work team.

medical rqmts: Candidates should be medically and physically able to perform the tasks expected in terms of strength, agility and co-ordination and be able to haul their own body weight repeatedly. They should also be able to withstand the stresses of the working environment such as exposure to heights, heat, cold and bad weather.

Candidates should also be free of medical conditions which are contra-indications for this type of work, e.g. asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, obesity, etc. Completion of a self-certified medical declaration indicating such fitness will be required for all rope access courses. Minimum age is 18 years.
